Male lion (Panthera leo) in Karoo National Park

Driving through the wide, arid desert of Karoo National Park just after sunrise I spotted a male lion in the distance... so I cautiously brought my four-wheel drive to a halt, opened the window and started taking photos. After a few minutes I looked up to see that a young female had crept up behind me and was approaching from the other side.

I took a few shots of her but she came too close for the camera so I reached for the GoPro, strapped it to my head then watched to see what she was up to. Below is the video from the GoPro.

At first I had no idea what she had run away with but then I realised it was my flash diffuser… a piece of cloth fixed to a flash gun to soften the light. I’d obviously knocked it off the camera in my haste to close the window. She must have seen it fall and came to investigate… like an over-sized kitten running off with a dropped glove.

Needless to say, I decided against getting out of the car and chasing after them to get it back!
