• Beetle Mania!
  • 26th April 2014

  • I went back to the Alun Valley today and saw lots of different types of beetle making the most of the spring sunshine. Below are two of my favourites.

Tiger Beetles must be our most attractive beetles with their beautiful irridescent colours.

The strange bloated creature below is an Oil Beetle. It has a facinating life-cyle which involves being picked up by bees as a tiny larva and then carried back to their nest where it feeds on their eggs and pollen store. This one is a pregnant female... her abdomen is packed with over 1000 eggs ready to be laid!
